I used to collect them, but primarily for the art (especially those of Jim Lee, John Byrne, Joe Madureira; then Masamune Shirow, Isutoshi) but I stopped because there are a lot of times that all of the titles I wanted were always out.  I never knew I could reserve orders back then (and the people at the counter way back seemed to always be grumpy).

I might go back to collecting titles done by my fave artists (although I am more inclined to collecting manga a bit).

Hi Kim,

I'm just like you!  I used to collect comicbooks for the art, and switched from American Comics to Manga.  I stopped collecting when I lost my job and became a professional bum, but I do have an extensive collection when the only Manga translators were VIZ Comics and Dark Horse Manga.

If you ever get back to manga collecting, be advised that Tokyo Pop loves to alter the mangas they bring in.  Sad(

Thanks for the advise, although I really didn't get what you meant.

My cousin showed me some manga before, they were all in BW but the art was just awesome!  I never really did find out what the title to those books were, and I never understood them.

[OT] Lost your job?  How do you support yourself now then?

Manga is pretty popular in America right now, unlike when I was still collecting.  One of the more prolific translators of Manga these days is Tokyo Pop, but because they want to get the largest audience, they wont hesitate to change the names of the characters to make them more Westernized, or to remove artwork that they deem "rique".

For example: in the manga INITIAL D, the lead character's name is Takumi Fujiwara, and was changed to Tak.  His best friend, Itsuki, has been changed to Iggy.

One of the sub-plots in the story is that the girl that Tak likes actually has a Sugar Daddy, and in the Jap version, there are scenes where she is naked.  In the Tokyo Pop version, it has been edited.

Manga is normally BW, although some issues published in the initial anthology magazine are colored, but the moment it's compiled, they don't retain the colors.  Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell is one of the few Mangas that actually retained the color pages.

As for supporting myself... I don't.  !amazed  My brother does... although I am looking for a job at the moment.

I used to collect comics.  I started collecting when Image Comics has just been launched.  I think I may have about 10 or more titles that I was collecting then mainly from Image, DC Vertigo, and Dark Horse.  But coz of budget constraints and the emergence of 'Comic Scans' the titles I collect slowly dwindled from 1-2 titles to zero.  The last comics I collected was Savage Dragon by Erik Larsen and Hellboy by Mike Mignola.

started collecting comics back when i was in gradeschool. YEARS back haha.. stopped at the time Marvel comics were screwing up their plotlines and stories (Spidey-clone, Onslaught and Heroes Reborn). got back to collecting when they redid the Transformers, then i noticed i could actually afford comics again, so i'm basically back to collecting a few titles, mostly limited series tho

used to collect the manga of Dragonball Z by Tiger Publications and then got a few issues of Bastard, Boy and Gunslinger Girl

I used to be a collector before... nowadays I just wait for the compilation or graphic novels, since I can read them in one sitting, and its easier to handle.

I started during just before Crisis on Infinte Earths. Those were the days when storytelling IMHO was good. Hmm... X-Men had only one title, New Mutants, Power Pack  !dodge  , Legion of Super Heroes, Excalibur, etc. The arists I sought after before were George Perez (up to now I look for his work!), Bill Sienkiewicz, Arthur Adams, Alan Davis, Alan Silvestri, John Byrne, John Romita Jr., etc.

I did dabble a bit in Manga, specifically Katsushiro Otomo's Akira. I have a complete set of this Manga published by Marvel's Epic Comics (37 issues), where they made the first computer coloring (or so they claimed).

I used to buy comics just for the art too... mostly X-men by Jim Lee Smiley I also have the first few issues of some titles from Image comics (Shaman's Tears, Cybernary, Wetworks). Some of the most notable Batman graphic novels (Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison, Hush 1 and 2 by Jim Lee, Year 1 and Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, and the Long Halloween by Tim Sale) I consider the best of my collection Smiley

Yeah, used to collect too back in the early 90s when Marvel did X-Men #1 with Jim Lee and Chris Claremont.  I also collected some Image titles and even some Valiant titles (regretfuly).  I stopped after collecting after the stories did not appeal to me anymor especially the Executioner's Song series.

I went back to collect around 2004.  The comic books now have greatly improved story and art.  Like a resurgence in quality!  I collected mainly Daredevil, Connan, Ex-Machina and Fables.  However, the price has skyrocketed as well causing me to halt once more.  I remember standard price back then was P50- P75 per issue but now its P150-P175 per issue!

Might be better to go buy the trade paper back when it comes out.

i started collecting in grade school mainly the x-men titles... until they just started to come out too many XD then stopped due to utter confusion at all the x titles and the different storylines and worlds.

started late ninetys till 2000 with battle chasers and the whole cliffhanger line. then a few batmans and some spidermans... and a few one shots.

lately though have been more selective in terms of comics. i go for story and art. or both... though its rare to have both of it in one title these days.

i collect fables lately though...

I stick to trades nowadays.

I kinda got impatient waiting for a month (or at times, months) for the next issue.  So nowadays, I save up for the trade paperback collections.

Some I'd recommend:
The Planetary
The Authority (the old runs, not the new ones)
The Ultimates
Y The Last Man
The Invisibles
WE3

Although some ongoing titles are still worth following:
Astonishing X-Men
The Walking Dead

Some of the recent story arcs, like DC's Countdown and Marvel's Civil War have been hit and miss for me, so I don't know if I'll be feel up to collecting those.
