From darthvid's post here:

Quote
I asked my friend to order a copy for me during the recent holiday season (he used my name, I think).  They told him the shipment "may" come around the end of Jan, but when I got some chances to drop by and ask for updates, well, they just aren't so sure about the dates.

Anyhow, I'm "supposed" to have something reserved for me already, I just won't know when the things actually come in (so if you leave a post when the shipment comes like you said, that would really help)

+++ Sure, man.  I'll post here as soon as new stuff arrives in Fortress.

Quote
BTW, I skimmed by the recent posts in WarmachinePh and noticed that in the last two posts, Cryx didn't do to well.  Still, I'll probably try starting with them. As much as I like hulking guns, I also think the Skarlock looks pretty cool.  Besides, they seem to be the most Zerg-like among the four. I just hope I'll be up to it when the time comes that I have enough models to play.

I'm just getting my act together (time, and more importantly, funding), but I'm planning on starting out by getting (not at the same time) the Iron Lich, some NightWenches, Skarlock, and a Helldiver (i loved the Lurker in Starcraft).  If things don't work out after the first few figs, I'll still have some cool figs for display, and maybe it'll be an excuse to get Khador jacks.

LOL well Fortress Siege results are just that - game results from Fortress.  Other games are played at houses/garages from all over (well not that many like in the US though) but I decided to tally results from the LGS venue.  And it's for this year only, so it might pick up as soon as more Cryx players get games in over at Fortress.

One of Cryx's strong points is their mastery of spellcasting.  They have an awesome array of magic to be used against enemies, and they have really good means to get said nasty spells onto the enemy.

That said, the Skarlock is one of Cryx's more regularly-seen models.  It may be paper-weak if the enemy gets to it, so don't have it out in the open field in enemy lines of fire.  It's a must-have because it can cast some spells that the warcaster (army leader) can cast.  And having an extra spell slinger is good in any game.

Zerg-like?  Well not in the "alienesque" sense.  They're undead who patch together their thralls with mechanika.  But yeah, Cryx infantry is cheap points-wise, so you can put together a horde army easy with them.

Nightwretches are currently the more versatile bonejacks in the Cryx arsenal.  Spells can be channeled through them, plus they have a ranged attack that can prove harmful to enemy light infantry.

Helldiver is a pain (for me LOL).  It is the newest bonejack (released in the latest book) and provides for board control and tactical maneuvering for the Cryx advance.

Iron Lich Asphyxious is a very nice warcaster.  Currently there's only one guy playing him among the local Cryx players, so if you play using him, it will be a good thing as you might provide an alternate approach on playing the Lich.  He can be played as direct as you want or as tricksy as you want.  Plus the model is cool ^_^

I play Khador and I've enjoyed the army despite what any naysayer has to spout off.  I got into WMH supposedly for the Khadoran warjacks, but as of current, I usually take only one warjack in any pointage.  My play style can be a bit Cryx-y tricksy but using Khador infantry mostly.  The jacks are now dust-gatherers at home LOL

By "Zerg-like", I meant smaller, weaker, but faster and quirkier (unusual capabilities) units. Cryx seemed to fit the bill more than the others.

I made an unplanned visit to Fortress earlier today.  I was aiming to get an Iron Lich and a Skarlock, but they were out, so I just got myself a pair of Nightwenches (yes, I know it's actually "NightwreTch", lol).  It's probably a good thing I got those first, I'm currently having problems getting the bone color right. I only have the Cryx paint set right now, and it appears I need at least a plain white to fix up the bone.  It looks pretty nasty (not in the good sense) when I just use the bone color from the Cryx set, and I'm not even sure if the cryx bone plus white highlights would be enough to make the bone look... well... like bone.

Smaller?  Yeah they're smaller compared to Khador (except the Deathjack).  Weaker?  If you say weaker armor and lesser damage boxes on their warjacks, yeah it's true.  But they compensate for more on other things.  Faster?  Yeah, pretty much darn.  Quirkier?  Well, with this game, EVERYTHING has its quirks.

Bone color eh?  What colors do you have right now?

Right now, all I have are the colors from the Cryx paint set and a Tamiya Silver. I was hoping to use the old GW starter paint set I had, but they all dried up.

I've been reading the painting tips thread and noticed good reviews regarding the P3 paints.  Based on other tutorials around the net, it seems the recommended paints for bone is GW Bleached Bone and some GW Brown ink.

I plan on getting GW Bleached Bone, GW Skull White, GW Gunbolt Metal (I remember being very satisfied with that color years ago), Black and Brown ink, and Tamiya Smoke (for some enhanced metal effects). If they will provide what I need, I'll get 'em, but I am on the lookout for good (and hopefully cheaper) alternatives.

Does P3 or Tamiya have any equivalents to those (and are they good?) Ithink I also saw Sempco (?) mentioned here and there, but I can't seem to find any at the NBS' I've gone to.

As I've mentioned on the other post:

GW Boltgun Metal = (more or less) P3 Pig Iron + P3 Cold Steel (or just plain Pig Iron)

GW Bleached Bone = P3 Menoth White Base

With your current paints, here's what I recommend to get the bone effect:

1. Paint over a black basecoat
2. Paint P3 Cryx Bane Base on the stuff you want bone
3. Mix 2 parts of P3 Cryx Bane Base with 1 part of P3 Jack Bone, layer it on the first coat of Bane Base.  Paint in a way that some of the more recessed/deeper parts are plain Bane Base.
4. Mix 1 part Bane Base and 2 parts Jack Bone.  Do the same as #3 but leave some of the underlying color.
5. Finish with flat Jack Bone.

The key here is the addition of water to the paints.  If you mix the paints, they tend to become "gummy" fast.  Add a spot of water to remedy this.  Myself, I keep adding until it's like thick milk before I paint it on.

It IS time consuming, but I assure you your models will look ace if you exert the effort into it.

Expert advise: Increase the steps above but vary the paint mix with more parts.  The more the layers, the more shaded it should come out, and hence expert-looking.

I'm surprised people think that cryx doesn't so quite well.

I do bone by just painting one of the off white colors and washing it with brown or black, then just highlight with white

That works well of course.  My post on how he can do "bone" is from the colors currently available to him, so hopefully he can achieve more or less the same effect without buying and buying too much.

Thanks to the tips I got, I'm ready to finish up on the 2 Nightwretches. Actually, I've been ready to finish em since last week, but I'm currently obsessing over how it's turning out that I can't seem to just sit down and finish! ^^

I do understand that I might spend a bit at the start, but I'm hoping that as I learn, I'll also start using the paint more efficiently.  Regardless, I'm quite happy.  It's a hobby, and I intend on enjoying it regardless of "productivity".

Right now, I'm half torn between just finishing what I've done so far to asking for comments (to prepare for the next figs) and obsessing about what I did right/wrong a bit more!  When I finally get over it, I'll probably post some pics and ask for comments (it's gonna be embarassingly noob output, tho ^^).

I heard that stocks came in at Fortress this past week. I got my Prime Remix already!  Grin

Since I was enjoying my Nightwretches and wanted to add more victims to my poor painting skillz, I got the Cryx Battle Box as well.  I'll finish up the 'wretches and do more experiments on the new death turkeys.
