Twilight Struggle is a two player card-driven boardgame on the Cold War era struggle for political dominance between the Soviet Union and the United States. It was designed by Ananda Gupta and Jason Matthews and published in 2005 by GMT.

It won the 2005 Charles S. Roberts Award for Best Modern Era boardgame, and the 2006 International Gamers Award for Best Wargame and Best 2 Player Game. It was the first game ever to win two International Gamers Awards. Twilight Struggle also received a 2006 nomination for the Diana Jones Award for Excellence in Gaming

Veteran game designer Alan R. Moon, designer of the popular Ticket to Ride, had this to say about the game:
TWILIGHT STRUGGLE is my all-time favorite game. It is a brilliant first design by the team of Jason Matthews and Ananda Gupta. It takes the card-driven genre of games like WE THE PEOPLE, HANNIBAL; ROME VS. CARTHAGE, and WILDERNESS WAR to its highest peak. Every game is different and the game gets better and better as you become more familiar with the individual cards. You are surprised as hidden combos are revealed game after game. Every turn is filled with tension as you try to figure out the best way to play the hand of cards you've been dealt. Gaming simply doesn't get any better than this

Congrats on your wedding anniv too!  You got a nice gift! Grin Seen this game before in BGG and it has a score of 8.3 with 1749 ratings!  Also ranked in BGG as #4 game overall!  Shocked

Just a question:  the 3rd edition is the same as the Deluxe Edition, yes?

The Deluxe Edition has the mounted boards and improved graphics, and incorporates all the errata and corrections.  Not sure if they modified the cards.

Is there an official 3rd ED? I'm aware of only the 2nd ED then the Deluxe Edition.

I checked BGG and it appears that the 3rd edition is also considered the deluxe edition. So its the same banana pala.  The difference I was referring to was between the 2nd/1st editions and 3rd/deluxe edition.

There's a gentleman on this board who is selling his TS and is claiming it's the 3rd, not the Deluxe, Edition.  I looked around and it seemed like the 3rd *is* the deluxe edition.  Anyway, I think he's just being careful about how he represents the game ... something I appreciate.

A lot of the old guards are. If it's a tournament you're planning then I suggest you start early given the length of the game (I hosted one before) Smiley

I believe Jay held a tourney before that was received particularly well. I think there is a good dozen players around here

In my nearly three years in the community, I've encountered the following players of Twilight Struggle, all of whom have earned the right to play the game competitively:

- Adrian (younger one)
- Adrian (other one)
- Jay
- Tom
- Steve
- Gerald
- Dale
- EJ
- EJ's friend (completely forgot)
- Arnold
- John
- Thea
- Jake
- a couple of Hobbymania regulars

There are more if you add some casual players of the game. Smiley

Hey John.  The gentleman you're referring to is Steve, and is a good friend of ours. Smiley  He owns both a 2nd Ed (paper map) and Deuxe Ed (mounted board) copy of TS.  Just check with him if he's selling the one with the paper map or the one that's mounted.  He might be confused himself.

If by John above you mean me, then I think you're sadly mistaken.  I've only played the game once and had my tender behind handed to me by Jay.
