I think they're Lords, part of one of the included expansions. I have no idea what they do though. Produce more? Unrealistic, as we all know Lords are lazy. Hahaha!

Yes, they are the nobles from the expansion. They are exactly like colonists, except that each noble is worth 1 VP at the end of the game.
Maybe they are captured African royalty, hence the VP
