Greetings!

The Philippine Historical Boardgamers Club (Philboardgamers) will have its next official Wargame Meet (WGM) on October 10, 2009. The WGM will be open from 10am to 10pm.

The Wargame Meet is a gathering of wargamers and history buffs from all over the Philippines. It is open to everyone sharing these interests, from the most hardened veterans and professional academics, to first-time wargamers and to people who just like reading history books.

It aims to provide a friendly, comfortable, and easily accessible setting for the following activities:

• Playing classic wargames – the Philboardgamers crew owns an extensive collection of wargames, the largest collection in the Philippines. People who go to the WGM can expect to play an enormous variety of games – ranging from timeless classics such as Panzerblitz and Squad Leader, to recent hits such as Here I Stand, Fire in the Sky, and A Victory Lost.

• Discussing military history, along with strategy, tactics, and combat doctrine. The Philboardgamers crew includes several professional teachers and historians well-versed in this subject, as well as many well-read amateurs with extensive history book collections. Whether you’re interested in the tactics of the Roman Legions, the campaigns of Napoleon, the great battles of World War 2, or even comparing the merits of various modern Main Battle Tanks (i.e. Leopard 2 vs Merkava 4), the WGM is a great opportunity to meet and talk to people who are fascinated by the Art of War.

• Trading/Buying games and books. The Wargame Meet is a good venue for finding books and games that you’d like to add to your collection, or for finding a new home for an old game that you’re about to let go.

The venue is a function room at Residencia 8888, Ortigas Center. It is close to the University of the Asia & the Pacific. It is located centrally in the heart of Metro Manila. It is easily accessible via mass transit, and ample parking space is available in the area. Please e-mail Thomas Ting (the Club President) at zinegata@yahoo.com or call/text him via the number 0929-10-100-19 if you require more details.

The theme for this month’s wargame meet is Science Fiction/Fantasy. So far, some of the games suggested include:

- Federation Commander: A lighter version of the well-known "Star Fleet Battles", players take command of Federation, Klingon, Romulan, and other warships in the Star Trek Universe. Manage your resources effective and defeat your enemies through the crafty maneuvering and creative use of your weapons. Fire the Photon Torpedoes!

- Starship Troopers: Avalon Hill's take on the classic novel by Heinlein. Take command of a platoon of Mobile Infantry soldiers or their alien enemies. See the original "guys in powered armor" as they fight to protect humanity from the alien menace!

- War of the Ring: FFG's grand strategic wargame covering Sauron's final bid to conquer Middle Earth. Command the forces of Rohan, Gondor, the Elves, and the Dwarves and try to buy time for the Fellowship to destroy the Ring, or command the forces of Darkness and try to subjugate the land of Men by conquering them or by corrupting the Ring-Bearer.

- Sword of Rome: A card-driven classic featuring the rise of the Roman Republic, this is a beloved classic among the Philippine Wargaming community. Command the Romans, the Greeks, the Samnites & Etruscans, the Gauls, or the Carthaginians as they fight for control of the Italian peninsula. Unique mechanics and objectives on each side makes this game highly replayable, with no two games being the same.

- Classic Battletech: Command a platoon or company of giant robots and destroy your enemies! The iconic American giant robot franchise has produced numerous excellent and detailed wargames over the years, and this can be your chance to play one of them. Target those heat sinks!

Again though - you can play games outside of the chosen theme. You're just encouraged to stick with this month's theme Smiley.

If you’d like to propose or bring other games, please also e-mail Thomas Ting (contact details above). Preferably, submit all wargame requests/proposals by October 8. This will allow the organizers to contact the owners of the games and to prepare the matches.

A minimal entrance fee of P100 will be charged to cover for the rent of the venue. Additional donations to help cover the cost of the venue are also welcome.

We hope to see everyone at the next Wargame Meet!

aww man...I'd love to go, but I have to study (and sleep) for most of the day...

hmmm, maybe if I do well at the office this week, I can slack off a bit.  we'll see.

Badbeef/Gelo,

Thomas said that you're interested in playing Battletech and can bring the game.  I'm interested too but only have a hazy recollection of the quick start rules posted by Catalyst Games.  Are you willing to teach?  What time will you be there if ever?

Off topic... Are you the same Gelo that played the email DnD game which I DMed a few years back?

sadly i dont have the classic battletech set anymore.. (I got the tech readouts and the maps but not the rules)
(and i havent bought the revised one at fortress)

what i have for battletech is actually BattleForce 2 (one counter equates to one lance)

do have the computer version of the boardgame though..  (mekamech) which one can play on.. and does a good interpretation of the game already --

---
sadly I cant really teach anything this month as my sched to the event is variable. the wife and kid will be milling around in megammall and we have a kiddy party to go to at 6pm.. -- a typical game will take 2.5 hours.. so i doubt will finish by then -- perhaps next time.. I can bring a naval cold war game if anyone is interested... that or chaos in the old world. (space hulk to big to carry around sadly) -- still as im going to be lugging the laptop anyway might as well bring that as well.. (the virtual battletech game)
--
off topic -- nope never played online DnD

Hi Gelo,

Let's aim for the naval cold war game. I'd like to try it out. The theme is not mandatory for all games naman Cheesy.

Thanks

Thomas
