Guys I know a lot of you are pc gamers also, but I just want to tell you that Civ 5 has been announced... and the biggest change that they are having is... its now HEX based...

a wish come true for me I have been wanting it to be hex based ever since Civ 2 due to AOE

After all this time avoiding Civ, I finally picked up Civ IV. Its pretty good, though I prefer Might and Magic more because of the theme.

If you're running after theme, Alpha Centauri is actually a superior choice. It's a very good game about exploring the possible future of the human race.

Also, there is a Civ IV mod whose name escapes me at the moment... but it's part of the Beyond the Sword expansion pack. Basically, it rethemes Civ IV into a Fantasy Strategy game where you play a hero trying to prevent an evil necromancer from freezing over the world.
