I just had to share this. Martin Wallace, British Game Designer responsible for notable games like Automobile, Brass and Steam recently had this to say:

“There are two schools of thought as to why the Germans love board
games, The Germans are of the opinion
that it’s down to their superior education system. We English are of the
opinion that it’s because German TV is shit.” - Martin Wallace

... If that is the case what's OUR excuse? Tongue

Well Philippine TV is generally shite, while most of the the stuff on American TV is either bollocks or cannibalized. I boil it down to a vehement refusal to accept crap for entertainment in my eternal quest to battle ennui.  Grin

I started because of the mental challenge -- the figuring out of the puzzle.  I stayed because of the company of friends.

I like the strategic and tactical thinking that the games make you do and I like that it puts you in the shoes of a military commander, businesman, explorer/adventurer, etc.    Wink

I even get those tiny custom (for jewelry) zip-locks for d cardboard coins in some of my games.  Wink

I know... I know... it started when I started collecting in 2000 back in Southern Califonia.  Tongue
After a year or so later Wizards of d Coast & Game Keeper game stores started closing their SoCal outlets & moved to online selling.

I'm not a console player but more on PC.
Actually 90% of my PC use is just for the Total War series games  Cheesy

But yeah, for d fun social aspect -- boardgaming, sports & outdoor retreat challenge.  Cool

Thats why I disconnected my TV service (@2005) when I got back from my 10 years in the States   Wink

U will b astounded how much time it frees-up in ur daily routine by doing that.  Shocked

I only miss watching the new episodes of CSI, ESPN (touranament paintball or poker), Discovery & History Channel on those rare occasions.
I just get d daily news from d car radio or paper.
 Cool

I love the smell of imported cardboard in the morning Tongue Other than that, rulebooks, rulebooks... part of what I like games are for the simple pleasure of reading and learning new rules Smiley

More enjoyable than computer games, less rules lawyering as compared to RPGs and another player is more than likely to be within punching distance!

I suck at RTS and don't really go for MMORPG... well, probably because a lot of times it actually means "many men on-line really pretending to be girls".   Grin

I play board games and card games because (surprisingly) it allows me to not stay at home doing nothing.
