For some reason, I was under the impression that each manager could only have one copy per staff upgrade.

i don't think it's written in the rules but it's a highly suggested house rule since it can cause swings of as huge as 20 points.

Who highly suggests this? In any case, a play tester stated on BGG that you can have duplicate staff upgrades. Its random, the game is random, the cheating can be very swingy too, it has the appearance of player choice but its still largely luck of the draw + in-game conflict/politics + meta game, but I still like it a lot more than Quarriors.

Posters on BGG, otherwise if it came from FFG it would be an official variant. I think to say that it's random is a bit exaggerated eh? All effects such as tackling and cheating all have a relatively high chance for a positive effect than a negative one and thus can be managed accordingly. I think the management of risk is similar to other card games with dice out there like.. say.. Summoner Wars?

However upgrades can be pretty swingy and uncontrollable since you are largely at the luck of the draw on what you will get. I guess that's what the house rule is trying to fix.

But to each his own.  Grin

I did not see many posters on BGG suggesting this. If at all, the threads regarding the rules questions on duplicate upgrades just stated that they are allowed without any prescribed "remedy". If what you say about cheating is correct then the Elves are really screwed.

Maybe its a matter of perspective and taste, but there's still a lot of randomness in it- The random draw + random effects and dice + random card rewards make for a lot of randomness. What mitigates it is that every "week" you get a fresh handful. Also, there is meaningful choice primarily in the awards you vie for and how much "manpower" you put behind it. But even as that gives you the feeling of control, the outcome of a "headline" is still just that random- unless you are the elves whose players don't cheat.

As to the upgrades, they are just like acquiring star players in terms of luck of the draw and arguably swinginess. You have to vie for them and hope you get to swing in the right direction. Also that warpstone souvenir card is ridonkolous.

Will try the Elves again next time. While I was also underwhelmed in my first usage of them, I'm of the thinking that Elves in the early game need to abuse Guard as much as possible to protect their ball-handlers. Assuring the ball on their side should off-set their lack of star power and the swinginess of the cheating tokens. Getting star players moving forward will also allow you to use their sprints more effectively as well. That sounds like a strategy right? Tongue Also, IMHO the fact that you can choose the kinds of pay-outs that you will get just by standing on one side of a highlight is a subtle way of reducing the chaos.

I've played it a couple of times already (4?) and I think players who know what they are doing will still come up on top. I played Chaos yesterday and won by a hair over the Skaven 41-40, the Elves were 37 and the Humans were 25. Only the Human was a first time player. I suffered plenty ejections but I felt choosing my battles carefully contributed highly to the win (barely participated in the tournaments).

My game before that, won by a hair again as Humans against the Skaven (I think that was our game?), me and Claro have played it before while you and Luigi were the first time players.

IMHO, it's the kind of game wherein if the odds really aren't going your way, even a good player will lose. I'd say 30% of the time even a good player can lose to a newbie.* If somebody finds this too chaotic, then this may not be their cup of tea.

*That figure was totally pulled out from my experience with Summoner Wars which I keep on comparing to this game in terms of odds. Haha. Grin

For people who play this game, here's a clarification of the guard ability:
