I am thinking of having a top boardgame for 2010

I need your opinion on how we can do this Cheesy

What criteria will we use? Will it be games just released in 2010? or games we were able to acquire this year? game with the most number of plays? or should we make it the most favorite game of our forums?

How will the voting mechanic go will it be by a jury? or we can use the polls? or just have someone pick all the titles from a fishbowl hat?

This idea will continue depending on your feedback Cheesy so feedback on basta wag lang static... ok?

I think we should ask everyone to give their top 5/10 games, then take it from there. My take for this year (all just based on "on top of your head recollection):

1. Dominion (or alternatively, all deck building card games...)
2. Dixit (as winner of Spiel des Jahres 2010)
3. Powergrid (our hobby is now inching towards become more mainstream... see plays at NG!)
4. Race for the Galaxy (first arc finished, so what's next?!)
5. Castle Ravenloft (dungeon crawl in less than an hour, anyone?)

hey nice one viscoos. Imo i think this should have a criteria to limit what is considered in the list, something like "games that came out this year that you've played this year as well". One so this can be made a regular thing that doesnt end up with the same titles at the top and also to highlight what great new wonders our little community has encountered Smiley We can have an "of all time" list if we want our ultimate faves listed. What do you think?

thanks for posting your top 5 John Cheesy as mmj pointed out it will be a bit problematic if we want to do that every year Cheesy maybe when we do an ultimate list then we can do the top 5/10 Cheesy

i think that we should limit our criteria Cheesy
I like the idea of games that came out 2009-2010 that we were able to acquire.  But what genre will we seperate the card games and boardgames or same lang?
are we going to separate gateway, heavy etc? euros and at?

We could have two categories:
1.  Best Newcomer Game
2.  Best Game played this year

The emphasis on the first award is for games that came out in 2010 (or the current year).  The emphasis on the second award is on the best game played this year, regardless of the year that the game was produced.

The first would be justified more on the game's quality as a strong newcomer to the boardgaming world.  The second would be more about explaining why a game is that great (or continues to be great).

But here's my big suggestion: let's not just make this about the voting.  Let's make it about the discussion! Cheesy

My suggestion:

Phase 1:  Everyone nominates 5 games to each award category
Phase 2:  All nominations are put up for a general vote, to pick the top 5 in each category
Phase 3:  The top 5 are announced per category, and then, a second part where we will determine ranking of the top 5 via a different voting phase.
Phase 4:  Separate threads will be opened per top 5 game, and 1 week is given for people to defend/justify why their game deserves to be on top.  This will encourage lively discussion about the games.
Phase 5:  Final voting (with ranking) of the top 5 games
Phase 6:  Final announcement

If that's the case why stop at 5? Publish the whole list of games people nominated voted and ranked so that well have our own ttw ranking of games.

It'll give the community a gauge of what games most of us are geared towards as well giving newcomers a quick overview of what games we think are good in terms of ranking.

Indicate as well how many votes got what or something like an average ranking for the game by each voter

@panda: thats like 3 layers of voting... so it will just be 2 categories?
We will be pitting all 2010 games against each other?
and all other games against each other?

@Claro: masmahirap yung idea mo na we have to keep the votes and ranking to average (nakakatamad siya gawin haha) pero ok nga sana if we have our own ranking system like BGG but mej limited yung forums Cheesy

Two layers lang.
1st: for cutting down all nominations to top 5
2nd: for ranking top 5 in #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5.

Meron lang "public discussion" before the 2nd layer of voting.  Para people can discuss, debate, present points why a game deserves to be in a certain ranking. Smiley

Of course we have to do this for two categories (or kung ilan man yung maisip nating categories).  If too much work, eh di one category lang.

We also have to be creative about the second layer of voting.  Kailangan may creative way of voting that will determine ranking.  Di pwede one vote each lang tapos auto-rank... that will result in too few votes if one vote per person.  I'm still thinking how to do this.

If that's the case why stop at 5? Publish the whole list of games people nominated voted and ranked so that well have our own ttw ranking of games.

It's a good idea, but will take more time.  And I wanted to focus on the top 5, kasi i wanted to promote a lively discussion of each of those 5 games.

Imagine, 1 Forum thread per game, where people present points/arguments on why they deserve to be in top place (or 2nd, 3rd, 4th or last).  It's easier to manage 5 than a whole lot. Smiley

But we can still do your idea... hmm... as an overall ranking thing (not just a 2010 thing).  Let me think about it, and ask other people. Smiley

ah so the discussions are there to influence the ranking on "phase 2", gets. but in both phases, voting pa rin ang method to get included and ranked correct?

My suggestion is to first let people list down the games they have most frequently played this year. I would include all games including those that weren't published this year, since including that exemption would remove a great number of games.

After a set number of years, I give 5. A game may be included in a Hall of Fame.

Also, gamers have a tendency to change their minds year by year, so the games will change rank yearly.

Vic may still have a list of games being played in the OGM, including the number of times they were played, although I may be mistaken. Add that to the scoring.

Finally, add weighted points via people voting on their top 5 games. IMO, The reason number of plays has more score than just a ranking of favorites because people vote more with their actions than their words. A game played more often means a game that is more liked than those that aren't.

@sandbox: i am a bit iffy about frequency. i disagree with "a game played more often means a game that is more liked" This is not always true since there are a lot of other factors in deciding which game will be played.

I will try to integrate number of games played in the final system since i value your suggestion Cheesy

@other people: I need someone to help me do this since I will be leaving on the 18th, so i need a partner in doing this while im gone.
