Yomi is a card game that simulates a fighting game. It tests your ability to predict how your opponents will act and your ability to judge the relative value of cards from one situation to the next. Also, it lets you do fun combos and be a panda. There are 10 characters to choose from, each with their own deck, abilities, and style. Each deck also doubles as a regular deck of playing cards with beautiful artwork (the complete game features a whopping 120 different character illustrations).

Yomi is the Japanese word for “reading,” as in reading the mind of your opponent. Yomi: Fighting Card Game is a simple competitive card game that simulates a fight between two characters. Each deck in Yomi represents one character, with 10 decks in the first release.

Champion fighting game tournament player and tournament organizer David Sirlin designed the game to test the skills of Valuation and Yomi. Valuation refers to your ability to judge the relative value of moves (or cards) as they change over the course of the game. Yomi, the game's title, refers to your ability to guess which moves your opponent will make. There is more to it than guessing, though: some players have the uncanny ability to “guess” right almost every time, no matter the game.

The core mechanic is a paper-rock-scissors guessing game between attack, throw, and block/dodge (sometimes modified by special ability cards). Attacks and throws usually let you follow up with combo cards from your hand, while blocks let you draw a card. While it first seems "just random," you soon discover that the unequal and uncertain payoffs in this guessing game allow you really read what the opponent will do. Yomi captures the kind of mind games that occur during the high level in fighting game tournaments.

Excellent game. I've been playing the PnP version for a few months now, and have foisted it on mmj and kookoobah as well. Cheesy  It's fast, fun, and very portable - it's easy to have a quick one while waiting for your food to arrive at a resto.

I do think that the graphic design on the cards could have been improved - I wish they didn't have playing card symbols on them (I realize of course that Rook and Lum need the suits for their abilities). Don't get me wrong, the art is actually quite good, but something about the overall look of the game is pretty "indie".

Oddly enough, I like playing the three girls (Jaina, Sets, and Val) the most - it's fun to be the beatdown, stringing together combos.

Aw, well Sirlin is selling the complete Yomi PDFs at $15 for the set. Seems like a shame to deny an indie designer his well earned money.  Wink

Also, while I like Argagarg the fish, Lum the Panda is a bit of a joke character. I wouldn't recommend playing him to start with- in fact I'm not sure I'd recommend playing him at all.

On the other hand Grave, Rook, and DeGrey are excellent starter characters - they're good for learning the basics. (although in the long run they aren't my favorites)

Excellent little game indeed! The combination of guessing your opponents action and valuation of your available actions is well utilized in this fighting game simulation. Add to the marvelous art, I think this game is quite well worth it even as PnP. I've only ever been used to Rook and Val (just love how flowing Val's combos sometimes work Cheesy)

I love how the premium set looks like but at 100USD its kinda pricey.

with ten decks, that's priced like a regular ccg starter deck... without the benefit of customization.  hehe

Comes with a lot of extras, and the cards are alleged to be better than CCG stock. All in all it comes out to something like 10 pesos per card so its adequate Bang for your Buck. I'm thinking of getting this for my Brother who is addicted to Street Fighter and Tekken.

Nah, I'm pretty sure Sirlin is pulling your leg when he talks about OMG real playing card stock - don't casinos change cards every day or so?

Maybe once Yomi gets to the online disconters that give 30% off with free shipping it would be worth it... Personally I regret buying a "real" copy of Flash Duel at full price + shipping.

Yomi's playing card stock + protective coating means that the cards are more bendable than CCG cards (for easier shuffling), have a reinforced core for stiffness, and a coating to help protect from finger oils and scratches. It's unusual for a card game to go that extra mile, but then it's also pretty unusual to have so much awesome art, dozens of tournaments pre-release to tune balance, and 6 years of development. I hope you cherish this special first edition set.

-Yep that's a lot of leg pulling.  Grin As far as I know casino's change the cards to prevent card counting.

If it were about card counting, they could just re-shuffle between games. Casino cards (or decks) are primarily replaced when they are marked though wear.

Well that's good to know. Though its a mix of security and maintenance. Also depends on the casino, as each has house rules (oooh house rules) on changing cards, some of them cut the corners of the cards and sell them in the gift shop.

Try it online at:

AI is just okay. Good for learning though, also to explore the character abilities. I've been trying out Jaina, and she's pretty good.
