011 is an adventure game set in a steampunk version of the real world. Events take place in Turin, the "magical" city par excellence. In the uchronic "year 011", marvelous technology is powered by steam (as in Jules Verne's novels).
Since the city of Turin is trapped by the cold grip of a harsh winter that began three years ago, steam engines are vital for the survival of its citizens. Elaborate security systems ensure that the vital steam engines remain functional. It is the end of the Fimbulvetr, the great winter that in Norse mythology comes before the Ragnarök. It is said that Fenrir the Wolf will awake from his slumber, the Ragnarök will start and the world as we know it will cease to exist. A new beginning - or the end for us all?
Eight mysterious characters come from the North to stop the awakening of the Wolf God, but only one of them, the Chosen One, has the power to do it for real.
While alternately controlling the eight characters, the players must discover which is the Chosen One. Only the Chosen One can compose the mystical song which will return the mighty Fenrir back to his deep slumber. They must also find the magical Organ of Snorri, a unique instrument able to endure the magnificence of the enchanted melody.
The game uses a new "mechanical" action selection system and intrigues players with a paradox: the eight characters are all working together to stop the Ragnarök but only one player can achieve victory! To make things even more difficult in the middle of the game one of the players will become the incarnation of Fenrir and will now attempt to initiate the Ragnarök!
Each of the eight characters is imbued with the aspects of the Symphonic Metal band, Therion. The game is officially supported by the band, and both the leader of the ensemble, Christofer Johnsson, and many members of the band followed the design and the development of the game.
