Conquest of Nerath

War has come to the Dungeons & Dragons world! In the north, the undead legions of the Dark Empire of Karkoth march against the fragile League of Nerath, determined to sweep away the human kingdoms forever. To the south, the infernal Iron Circle launches its own goblin hordes in a campaign of conquest against the elves and corsairs of Vailin. From the snowy expanse of the Winterbole Forest to the sun-warmed coasts of ancient Vailin, four great powers struggle for survival.
Conquest of Nerath is a fantasy conquest game. 2-4 players muster armies of foot soldiers, siege engines, monsters, warships, elementals, and dragons to attack their opponents. Players employ heroes such as knights and wizards to lead their troops and explore dungeons in the search of magical artifacts and treasures to increase their power in combat.

Seems like WotC's response to Runewars. I'm hoping that they can do the "heroes exploring
and
leading armies" better. I'll be picking this up when it releases, I think.

WOTC may have finally realized the value proposition of extending their expansive D&D content into boardgames. Any details on the gameplay mechanics? If its like Runewars then I hope it doesnt also take 6 years to finish

Niyak - who have you been playing Runewars with? It's pretty fast - which is the main complaint against it from what I see on BGG.
Anyway, from what I heard - it's Risk 2010: D&D edition with a dash of the Runewars Hero mechanic: your heroes can go on adventures for special stuff and can actually mess with battles as generals.

I was only referring to the turns in Runewars (referred to as years) and how the game naturally ends after 6 turns if no one collects enough dragon runes, thus 6 years.
It is relatively fast.

The reviews are out, the dungeon explore mechanic is described as follows-
The final aspect of the battle phase is the exploring of dungeon spaces. If heroes end their turn on a dungeon, they have to resolve the dungeon space before anything else happens. To do this, you simply flip the dungeon door tile and it will tell you who the next contestant on the 'hellish, demonic creature is right' you have to duke it out with. This combat is resolved the same as the aforementioned troop-to-troop combat, but these creatures have bonuses that make them far nastier.
Some have modifiers that allow you to hit them only on a roll of seven or eight or higher, as well as other nasty things. If you defeat them, you get the volume of gold printed on the tile as well as a treasure card, which is the real draw to attacking dungeons. If you don't beat them during a round, you can always retreat, but in doing so you let the opponents know what creature is there as the tile stays face up. Apparently word travels fast in Nerath.
Once all of the combats have been resolved, the next phase begins, which is the repositioning phase. All flying creatures can take what amounts to an additional movement, provided they land somewhere that won't start a battle. Additionally, heroes who have defeated a dungeon must move off of the dungeon space, and if there's nowhere for them to go, they die instantly, yet more victims of the mighty Rabbit of Caerbannog, poor sods.
This can happen if you make the mistake of losing a ship in a previous battle, which I have done, and it's incredibly disappointing to defeat a dungeon guardian against all odds just to realize what an epic failure you've made by not allowing for an escape route afterward. After leaving a dungeon, you place not only one, but two dungeon tiles face down on the space that was beaten, making that dungeon all the more difficult to plunder next time.

So its basically, another battle, with the chance of L33t L3Ewtz. Interesting. Though you have to have an escape route to do it or die instantly.
