A co-worker was asking me this question:

Is there a game that can be played in 30 minutes and can handle a decent amount of player (team building size) or can be modified to be played in groups that teaches cost consciousness

Need recommendations, this might be a good time to let them know about boardgames

With the 30 minute game time, the first thing that came to my mind was 7 Wonders.  As for cost consciousness, I guess there is the card cost (in coin or resources) and action cost. (Limited actions per Age / Game)  Now if 7 players is big enough, I think the game is something you may want to look at. Smiley

EDIT:  Togashi beat me to the punch. Tongue

I've thought of 7 wonders too, I've played it once, can't seem to remember if i put much effort in gathering coins and I placed second that time, having thoughts on For Sale or High Society, I think a good and fast auction game will do. Any thoughts?

For Sale might be good but its grasp of the concept of cost consciousness is shallow at best.  I've never played 7 Wonders so I can't really comment on it.  The best games for cost consciousness are those that entail spending to build something that will benefit you over time.

I'm probably going to be the minority here but I agree with Tom Vasel... despite what we gamers think about 7 Wonders, it is NOT newbie-friendly. Maybe newbies who are already partly geeks but definitely not complete newbies to boardgaming. Furthermore, as a former facilitator of team-buildings myself, I don't think its style of play is fit for "team-building" as the interactions of the game is limited because people are mostly making decisions themselves without consulting or discussing things with their peers.

As for games that teach cost-consciousness that are still light but can fit large groups I think Descartes' "Blue games" series offers several that fit the bill. Dragon's Gold and Fantasy Business are good options.

For me , the best game that can fit a large group (8 people) that has high interaction and makes players  base decisions on cost vs risk is Incan Gold. It's more of a push-your-luck kind of game but based on the plays I have had, the cost of the treasures you've earned so far versus the dangers of pressing on the temple DOES  factor in to this light game as well as being newbie-friendly

I was thinking about Fantasy Business but his 30 minute requirement is really hard to fit.  Fast games and cost consciousness are two things that don't really go together well.

When I was first asked this about a game, the best of I can think of was Power Grid, but when she said that it needs to be 30 min. max i cant think of any

Cost consciousness as in money? Would Cashflow fit?

The easiest team building game I know that is very accessible is Werewolf or the Village. My fiance regularly holds TBS events, and this has never failed to please among ages as varied as 18 to 65.

Just suggestions! Cheesy

Maybe Modern Art, they can always play just one round instead of four to shorten playing time.

There's also Cashflow for Kids, which is shorter and simpler than Cashflow. Can't recall if it would fit within 30 minutes though.

That's what I told my co-worker, only Werewolf and the variants will fit the group size she was thinking of.

I'll just use this thread instead of starting a new one, got to ask for games fit for christmas party settings, I'm thinking of modifying Time's up:Title Recall, Say Anything and Telestration for a group setting, and is someone willing to lend me a copy of any of the three? Cheers
